    Hi everyone!

I own a 3D printer (RepRap I3 Metal Motion, ~550€) and I can tell that it’s rather difficult to make it a real business, unless you invest in a really good machine of a higher range.
The reason is that the printing is really slow and require a lot of time to keep the settings of the printer ok (you have to watch carefully what’s going on, re-calibrate from time to time, try different settings on the software to find what is going to fit your goals, etc). It’s not cost-efficient (€€€ vs time).

If you really planned to start a business in 3D printing, I’d recommend you to invest 5000€-15000€ to have a reliable tool to make mini-series (it includes a supposedly reliable software).
Also, find a company that proposes at the same time to buy some parts separetely, because you probably will have to change from time to time some elements like the plate, the nozzles, some sensors, etc.
And don’t forget that it will take you some time to really be comfortable with the printer. It’s normal, it demands different skills and there is a lot of common mistakes that 3D printer make. Be patient!

    Best regards,

    Léo

What kind of 3D printer do you recommend for someone wanting to start such a business?

I think 3D printing is going to dominate many sectors in the near future.

Have you seen the 3D printed leg/arm casts they are making nowadays? Very sturdy but lightweight at the same time, and more importantly you can wash yourself normally because they can get wet. They also don’t cause any itch because your skin can breathe.
Humans and animals alike are using titanium prosthetic limbs made with 3D printing as well.

Hope this technology helps lower the cost of health care for those with serious conditions such as missing limbs.

Haven’t tried it but it’s an interesting idea, 3D printing has lots of untapped potential in my opinion.

    What is a VPS ?
This srtartup looks great, because I believe bitcoin is meant to be THE worldwide money of this planet.
Otherwise I also really think you idea of selling good with a 3D printer is really good too. I really think the 3D printer are definitely a think for the futur.
You definitely seem to be a visionnor.

    Hi everyone,

I have a VPS for Bitcoin startup that is profitable but not making nearly enough right now. I’ve been wanting to diversify a bit and have a 3D printer, so have been thinking about selling printed parts on Ebay (for now).

I am not sure what sort of margins I could expect from one printer. I’ve seen some sellers sell thousands of tool battery holders and then some odds and ends that might have a few sales.

Have any of you tried to do this before?
