Yes, I understand and most of us, fathers, share similar stories, just like your friend’s is. With “what it used to be” I was referring to a historical fact that in the past, children were given to a father and not mother. I am not saying that I want a 19th Century back, but what I want is at least is give me some of the old respect back. Father’s figure is completely destroyed and most of the divorced fathers know that those 2 weekends you have in a month is more like “keeping in touch” with their lives and it has nothing to do with being a part of their lives. Mother has a complete control over that. As a father I can recommend, I can influence, I can say, but far from being a part of day to day decisions of my children.

I was just commiserating with my friend (also a divorced father) about how hard it is to be a divorced father. For me the difficulty is in two areas: day-to-day matters that any single parent (mother or father) will face, and the other is societal and legal. The divorce court system is total bullshit for fathers, and single mothers are about the worst possible parents for boys. The father should automatically have primary custody over his son, but the way it is set up the father will have to pay 10s of thousands of dollars on a lawyer just to even get 50% custody.

I’m curious what you mean about “a grain in comparison with what it used to be” because from my understanding it used to be even worse for fathers.

Sometimes I think value of fatherhood is just a grain in comparison with what it used to be. Mothers are mothers, we are all proud on our mothers, but especially divorced fathers live in very difficult times.
