I’m skilled at foraging and plant identification for herbal medicine and home remedies. I was very skilled at writing grants before my views went 180. Used to homebrew. Some musical talent. I’ve always had friends who were such great bakers or knitters so I just enjoyed those crafts through them.

I think the fact that you can buy a completed thing for cheaper than the unassembled parts/start up tools for a hobby also deflates the interest in the slower practice of learning a craft. Also, products designed to break and not be fixed, so people don’t learn as easily how to repair.

I can design and machine metal parts, reload ammo, a little programming, operate a 3D printer, build concrete and wooden structures, do simple chemistry (apply metallic coatings, follow formulas from google patents), and cook acclaimed bachelor chow.

I think that’s it for me crafting useful things. I can also do weird drawings and paintings that unsettle and amuse.

The drop off in craft skills may be related to how much of young people’s lives are spent online.

I would say I can cook or prepare any food. I am also very good at sewing, embroidery and knitting.

I feel that craft skills are being neglected a lot these days, especially among Gen Z and beyond. While my parents and grandparents had countless skills.
