Thanks for your participation and sharing of your experiences. Your Dad imparted a valuable, soy-free lesson on that trip. If you haven’t seen it you might appreciate a documentary entitled “Alone in the Wilderness”.

A wild animal does not have the concept of ruggedness and is inherently so just to survive. Many an animal bred to be domesticated and with traits not naturally occurring but inbred to serve their owners, would not survive in the wild. Such is the case with modern man in his domestication. Who is domesticated mans’ owner.

I remember my father taking me hiking and my feet bled from the boots. We were 200 miles from the nearest dirt road, dropped off by float plane on a lake. He told me to shut up or the grizzly bears would kill us both. Boots full of blood and shutting up. Its how boys learn ruggedness from their fathers. Men shut up and deal with it. That’s why its hard to get us to talk sometimes.

Ruggedness. That’s a core value I feel all men should seek out, build and maintain. Making it happen no matter what. It’s not about perfection, it is about doing it, imperfections and all. Good to see that word ruggedness up there. I once lived on the Yukon-Northwest Territory border for a year, it was very rugged. We as men must teach our sons ruggedness so they too can pass it on. Women need us men to be rugged. Good topic.

Hi, this particular forum requires contribution and participation in order to remain. Many on this site (and others, like Meetup for example) are perpetual joiners but never active participants. Joining is only half the step.

For anyone who has joined this forum and not yet contributed after 3 weeks of doing so, they will be removed.
